City of Collinsville Cool Cities Committee met Sept. 19.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

Brennan called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. The following members were present and answered roll call: Brennan, Glotfelty, Lutz, Marconi, Young.

Also Present: Deputy City Manager Derek Jackson, Willoughby Farm Superintendent Carol Frerker, Eric Wright Heartlands Conservancy, Betty Struckoff St. Louis Wild Ones.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

Glotfelty made a motion to approve the August 15, 2022, meeting minutes with corrections. Seconded by Marconi. Voice vote: All Ayes. Motion approved (5-0)

NEW BUSINESS

E.1 Guest Speaker – Betty Struckoff – St. Louis Wild Ones Maintaining Native Gardens

Betty Stuckhoff with the St. Louis Wild Ones Bureau provided a presentation to the Committee on Native Gardens. Struckoff shared information on topics related to non-native invasives, native nuisance plants, natives that need a warning label, reducing maintenance with groundcovers, tips for specific plants, yearly maintenance calendar, anticipated time for establishing a native garden, and a variety of resources where more information can be found.

E.2 Guest Speaker – Eric Wright – Heartlands Conservancy Collinsville Landfill Plan

Eric Right with Heartlands Conservancy provided a presentation to the Committee on the recently created Collinsville Landfill Plan. Wright highlighted the project goals, the scope of the project, and his efforts working with the City’s Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments. Wright outlined the management units of the landfill and provided implementation steps for each respective area. Wright stated that the plan will assist the City’s efforts for leveraging funding opportunities and will decrease the city’s operational cost while increasing the ecosystem benefits of the surrounding area.

E.3 Green Recognition Program 2022

Jackson informed the Committee that there were two nominees for the 2022 Green Recognition Program. The nominees are Jerry & Dorothy Young for their passive solar home at 320 West Juda Avenue and Lou Belle & Bing at 317 W. Main Street for their small business collective model which includes 28 local vendors. The Committee agreed that Jerry & Dorothy Young earned the honor of being the 2022 award recipient. Jackson informed the committee that Jerry and Dorothy would be honored during the C3 Collinsville Community Awards on November 10th at Gateway Convention Center. Brennan encouraged all Cool Cities Committee members to attend.

ITEMS FOR OCTOBER MEETING AGENDA

Jackson stated he does not have any items lined up for the October meeting. Jackson stated that he and Lutz both have weddings the week before and after the October meeting, so its possible Jackson may ask to cancel the meeting.

Motion to adjourn made by Glotfelty, seconded by Marconi.

Voice Vote: All Ayes. Motion Approved (5-0)
