Madison County's two universities invested $3,281,499 on their basketball teams in 2023, an 8.5% increase over the previous year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

The county’s funding for the basketball teams comprised 24.6% of all money invested in sports teams in 2023.

The average sports expenses in Madison County have grown 98.2% since 2010.

Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville stood out as the university in Madison County that received the most basketball funding during 2023. The institution received $2,942,643 - or 89.7% of all the money destined to basketball teams.

Basketball is one of the most popular sports played at U.S. colleges, as well as football. NCAA basketball teams are often as popular as NBA teams, and offer a different experience for fans.
