State Senators Erica Harriss and Jason Plummer are inviting residents to contribute photos and stories of veterans for a display at the Illinois Capitol. The display, which will be set up in the rotunda from November 11 to November 25, aims to honor Veterans Day by showcasing the legacies and sacrifices of those who served.
Senator Harriss emphasized the significance of this tribute: “Having the Veterans Day Display at the Illinois Capitol is a special tribute and humbling reminder to the brave men and women who have served our country,” she said. “I look forward to visiting the display wall every year and reading the stories of our heroes.”
Senator Plummer, reflecting on his own experience in uniform, added: “As someone who has worn the uniform, I understand how much this annual Veterans Day Display means to the men and women who have served their nation and the impact this has on their loved ones. It’s a heartfelt tribute to those who have given so much for our freedoms, and a much-needed reminder to honor their faces, their stories, and their commitment to our country.”
Families are encouraged to submit a photo along with a written story not exceeding 250 words. Required information includes name, military branch (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy), and conflict served (Afghanistan, Iraq, September 11, Gulf War, Vietnam, Korea, WWII, WWI, Peacetime or other). While military photos are preferred for submission purposes they are not mandatory.
Submissions should be emailed by November 8th to veteransday@sgop.ilga.gov or mailed directly to Veterans Day Wall at 110 D Statehouse in Springfield. Inquiries can be directed via phone at (217) 782-1154.
