FOIA Request Sent to City Of Granite City Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Granite City Finance Department on October 31, 2024. The request, issued by Metro East Sun, a media organization committed to local governmental affairs coverage, sought detailed information about city sales tax records.

Specifically, we requested a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. The requested list should include the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax each business paid within the specified period.

In addition to this comprehensive list of businesses and their respective sales tax contributions, we also asked for the total amount of sales tax that the city collected from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024.

As a media organization dedicated to providing accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs and promoting transparency in public institutions, we believe access to such public records is essential. These records will aid us in fulfilling our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

We have also requested a fee waiver as a media professional involved in gathering and reporting news to the public. We are currently awaiting a response from the City Of Granite City Finance Department regarding our request.
