With Election Day approaching, voters in Illinois are preparing to cast their ballots for the 2024 General Election. Polling places across the state will open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5. Voters must be in line before closing time to ensure they can vote.

For those unable to reach polling stations due to work commitments, Illinois’ Voting Leave law allows requesting up to two hours off work for voting purposes.

Illinois law prohibits electioneering within polling places or within a 100-foot radius. Campaign apparel and materials are not allowed inside polling stations. Election judges will oversee these rules using their discretion.

Registered voters who have previously voted need only provide their signature on Election Day. New registrants must bring two forms of ID, one showing their current address. Those who registered by mail without ID must vote in person with proper identification unless covered by specific absentee voting acts.

Voters with absentee/mail-in ballots wishing to vote in person should bring their mailed ballot; otherwise, they will use a provisional ballot.

Provisional ballots are available for those not on the voter list but believe they registered in their precinct. Eligibility confirmation is required for these votes to count.

Voting systems vary by jurisdiction but are certified by the State Board of Elections. Voters may receive instruction and assistance if needed, following proper procedures and affidavits where necessary.

Voters facing issues at polling places should contact poll workers or report problems to the Illinois State Board of Elections rather than confront others directly.

Early voting remains an option until Monday, November 4, with mail-in ballots requiring a postmark by Tuesday, November 5, for counting.
