State Representative Amy Elik recently provided updates on several key issues, including the Veto Session in Springfield, the ongoing trial of Michael J. Madigan and Mike McClain, drug exposures in Illinois Department of Corrections facilities, and a federal ruling on an assault weapons ban.
During a quiet Veto Session, Rep. Elik emphasized the need for bipartisan legislation. "We need bipartisan legislation that focuses on the issues that Illinoisans care about," she stated. The session saw little legislative action as many proposals were deferred to the Lame-Duck session scheduled for January.
The criminal trial involving former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan and his associate Mike McClain continues in Chicago. Both face charges related to influence peddling. On November 19, Juan Ochoa testified about his appointment to ComEd's governing board as a result of being a Madigan ally.
Concerns have been raised by Republican lawmakers regarding drug exposures in state correctional facilities. State Representative Charlie Meier called for answers from IDOC Acting Director Latoya Hughes and suggested pausing physical mail processes to address these concerns. "We should be taking every step necessary to protect our prison workers and inmates," said Rep. Meier.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul has appealed a federal ruling striking down Illinois' assault weapons ban, seeking to maintain its enforceability during the appeal process. "I voted no on the ban because I knew that this law was too vague and unenforceable," noted Rep. Elik.
As firearm deer season begins in Illinois, hunters are reminded of regulations regarding weapon use and clothing requirements for safety purposes.
Rep. Elik concluded her update by inviting constituents to reach out with any questions or assistance needs related to state agencies.
