The 104th General Assembly of Illinois was inaugurated on January 8, marking the start of a new legislative session. Representative Elik expressed gratitude to her constituents in the 111th district for their continued trust and commitment to representing their interests in Springfield.

In a recent development, the Illinois House of Representatives renewed Madigan's House Rules for another two years. These rules, drafted by the Democrat supermajority without input from Republicans, are seen as granting significant power to the Speaker of the House. The rules dictate committee structures and influence which bills advance through public hearings or stall in committees. There have been criticisms regarding these rules, particularly concerning accountability and transparency.

The previous General Assembly ended its lame duck session on January 7 without addressing several pressing issues like the state budget deficit and rising crime rates. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie criticized Democratic leaders for holding an unproductive session at taxpayers' expense.

Former House Speaker Michael J. Madigan recently testified in his own defense during his federal corruption trial involving charges of bribery and racketeering. His testimony addressed interactions with former Alderman Daniel Solis regarding alleged quid pro quo arrangements.

In other legislative matters, Speaker Welch blocked action on a bill aimed at regulating intoxicating hemp products, despite concerns from licensed cannabis industry members about unfair competition.

Voting has begun on ten potential new designs for the State of Illinois flag, selected from nearly 5,000 public submissions. The advisory vote will continue until February 14, with results influencing recommendations to be submitted to the General Assembly by April 1.

As changes occur within the Capitol due to transitions in leadership roles, Representative Elik bid farewell to Dane Thull, her floor manager and advisor over the past five years.

For further assistance with state agency issues, constituents are encouraged to contact Representative Elik's office at 618-433-8046.
