State Representative Kevin Schmidt (IL) | Representative Kevin Schmidt (R) 114th District
State Representative Kevin Schmidt recently honored the East St. Louis Flyers Football Team for their victory in the 2024 Class 6A State Championship. The team secured the title with a 48-28 win over Geneva in November.
In recognition of their achievement, Schmidt presented the team with certificates from Springfield and hosted a pizza party. "I’m so proud of this team, who gives literal meaning to the ‘City of Champions,’" said Schmidt. "These high schoolers showed grit and determination, and deserved their win. I wanted to show them a little piece of appreciation with a certificate congratulating each member of the team and a pizza party."
The Flyers have now claimed their 11th State Championship title.
Schmidt also acknowledged Head Coach Darren Sunkett for his contributions to the team's success. Sunkett has been coaching in East St. Louis for 24 years and was recently recognized as the Chicago Bears 2024 High School Coach of the Year.
