State Representative Kevin Schmidt recently shared updates from the 114th District, highlighting local achievements and initiatives. Schmidt celebrated the East St. Louis Flyers football team for their state championship win, awarding them certificates and hosting a pizza lunch. He commended Head Coach Darren Sunkett, recognized as the Chicago Bears 2024 High School Coach of the Year.

Schmidt also met with Salah Wilson from Harambee International Inc., an organization focused on youth development through leadership skills and emotional intelligence. The group offers a summer camp to support these goals and relies on donations for its operations.

In business news, Schmidt announced a "Business of the Month" program to spotlight local businesses within his district. Nominations are open via his website, with one business selected monthly for recognition.

On legal matters, Schmidt discussed a constitutional challenge concerning venue limitations for lawsuits against the state of Illinois. The Illinois Supreme Court is set to decide if restricting cases to Sangamon and Cook counties infringes on due-process rights. Deputy Solicitor General Alex Hemmer defended this limitation before Justice David Overstreet raised concerns about potential forum shopping.

Additionally, grant opportunities were highlighted by Schmidt: DCEO's $10 million program for small business capital improvements and T-Mobile's grants up to $50,000 for community projects in small towns.

For Valentine's Day, residents are encouraged to create cards for veterans in senior care facilities within the district. Cards should be delivered to Schmidt’s office by February 12.

Schmidt will return to Springfield soon as legislative sessions continue.
