This week, Representative Amy Elik provided updates on her recent activities and shared news from around Illinois. She reported on her efforts alongside House Republican Leader Tony McCombie and Representative John Cabello to address immigration policies in the state. "The sad reality is that Illinois’ sanctuary state policy has cost Illinois taxpayers billions and made our communities less safe," she stated. The representatives are urging Democrats to repeal the TRUST Act to enhance communication between Illinois law enforcement and ICE.

In other news, the jury deliberations continue in the corruption trial of Michael Madigan, a significant figure in Illinois politics. Jurors have been deliberating since January 29th, with discussions lasting longer than similar high-profile cases. Madigan faces 23 counts related to racketeering, while his associate Michael McClain is charged in six of those counts.

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago for allegedly obstructing former President Donald Trump's immigration policies. The lawsuit challenges sanctuary laws like the Illinois TRUST Act, which restricts local law enforcement from assisting federal immigration efforts. The Justice Department claims these laws violate the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause.

Looking ahead, Governor Pritzker's Budget Address on February 19 will be a key event for the Illinois General Assembly. With a projected $3.2 billion deficit for fiscal year 2026, House Republicans are calling for budget cuts, particularly concerning services for migrants and undocumented immigrants.

Representative Elik also reminded constituents about upcoming events, including Valentines for Veterans and Mobile Office Hours in Glen Carbon.
