In other news, the jury deliberations continue in the corruption trial of Michael Madigan, a significant figure in Illinois politics. Madigan faces 23 counts related to racketeering, while his associate Michael McClain is charged in six of those counts.

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago for allegedly obstructing former President Donald Trump's immigration policies. The lawsuit challenges sanctuary laws like the Illinois TRUST Act, which restricts local law enforcement from assisting federal immigration efforts. The Justice Department claims these laws violate the U.S. Constitution's Supremacy Clause.

Looking ahead, Governor Pritzker's Budget Address on February 19 will be a key event for the Illinois General Assembly. With a projected $3.2 billion deficit for fiscal year 2026, House Republicans are calling for budget cuts, particularly concerning services for migrants and undocumented immigrants.
