Democratic legislators in Illinois have introduced House Bill 2827, known as the 'Homeschool Act,' which could significantly affect families opting for homeschooling. The bill would require these families to present an educational portfolio for approval and submit private information to the State Board of Education. Concerns have been raised about its impact on families with special needs children or those with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Representative Charlie Meier (R-Okawville) has voiced strong opposition to this legislation. He stated, "Families who make the decision to homeschool their children invest thousands of hours and years of hard work in providing quality, non-public school education for their children." He further criticized the bill by saying, "This legislation insinuates that homeschool families are not teaching their children correctly, and should instead follow whatever the heavy hand of Illinois government deems important."

The rise in homeschooling following the pandemic is noted across the nation, with many families choosing it for educational, social, emotional, or safety reasons. Meier emphasizes that each family should have the right to decide on their child's education.

Meier is urging constituents who share his views against HB 2827 to sign a petition opposing it. Details can be found at charliemeier.net.
