The Secretary of State has released the results of a statewide vote concerning the future of Illinois' flag. Among the options, which included the current flag and nine alternatives, the existing flag was favored by more than 130,000 votes.
State Representative Charlie Meier expressed satisfaction with the outcome: “Thank you to everyone who voted to keep our flag. Illinois needs to focus on lowering the cost of living, stopping the flood of folks leaving the state, and providing support for our small businesses. It is not the time to spend tax dollars a new flag.”
The next step involves a vote by the Illinois General Assembly on whether to proceed with changing the flag. Meier has stated his intention to oppose any change, affirming that “the people have spoken.”
