State Representative Kevin Schmidt has introduced a new bill aimed at expanding recognition for veterans in Illinois. The proposed legislation, House Bill 1421, seeks to establish the Veterans Day Paid Leave Act. This act would require employers to grant a paid day off on Veterans Day to employees who are veterans.
Rep. Schmidt expressed his respect for those who have served, stating, "We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices they made to protect the freedoms we all enjoy today." He further explained that the bill is straightforward and would allow employees who provide documentation verifying their veteran status to receive a paid day off work on Veterans Day. Additionally, the bill proposes an income tax credit for employers who offer this benefit to their veteran employees.
The introduction of HB1421 is part of Rep. Schmidt's efforts to acknowledge the commitment of veterans in serving the country. The State of Illinois already offers various programs and resources for veterans and their families, details of which can be accessed on Rep. Schmidt’s website.
