State Representative Charlie Meier, representing the 109th District in Illinois, has introduced legislation aimed at easing property tax burdens for seniors and other homeowners. The proposed bills, HB 1563 and HB 1746, seek to increase exemptions that could make homeownership more affordable.
HB 1563, authored by Rep. Meier, aims to expand the "Senior Freeze" by raising the income limit from $65,000 to $75,000. This adjustment would enable more seniors to qualify for property tax relief amid rising home values.
In addition to HB 1563, Rep. Meier is a cosponsor of HB 1746 which proposes an increase in the General Homestead Exemption to $10,000 statewide. Currently, this exemption stands at $6,000 outside Cook County and the Chicago Metropolitan area.
Rep. Meier stated: “It’s no secret that we need property tax relief. Illinois has among the highest property taxes in the country, and my constituents need relief. These two bills would have a direct impact on folks in our communities."
Both pieces of legislation are under consideration by committees and will be reviewed by the Property Tax Subcommittee soon.
