State Representative Charlie Meier of Okawville has voiced his opposition to HB 2827, known as the "Homeschool Act." The bill was discussed in committee and advanced despite objections from numerous families who prefer home or private schooling for their children. Under this legislation, non-public schools must register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Additionally, it requires homeschoolers to complete a Homeschool Declaration Form, with penalties including fines and imprisonment for non-compliance. Administrators would also need to provide personal information about themselves and students to authorities.
"Parents should be allowed to put their children in a learning environment that will help their own child succeed," stated Rep. Meier. He criticized the bill, highlighting other pressing issues facing Illinois such as budget deficits and rising crime rates.
Public resistance has been significant, with over 49,000 residents filing witness slips against HB 2827. Many citizens gathered at the State Capitol to share positive experiences related to homeschooling.
"I totally oppose forcing additional mandates on responsible parents," Meier said further. "I support families making decisions that are best for their children, and I strongly oppose this bill."
The bill was reviewed by the Education Policy Committee where it passed despite unanimous Republican opposition. It is now set to move forward for a vote on the House Floor. Residents opposed to HB 2827 can sign a petition and file a witness slip through ilga.gov.
