State Representative Amy Elik (R-Alton) is actively advocating for the rights of parents to select educational paths for their children. The "Homeschool Act," officially known as HB 2827, was discussed in committee and advanced despite significant opposition from families opting for home or private schooling.

The proposed legislation requires non-public schools to register annually with the Illinois State Board of Education. Additionally, it mandates that homeschooling families submit a Homeschool Declaration Form, with non-compliance potentially resulting in truancy charges, fines, or imprisonment. Administrators would also need to provide personal information about themselves and their students to authorities.

"Illinois should empower parents to place their children in education environments that help them learn and succeed," stated Rep. Amy Elik. She criticized the bill by saying, "Bureaucrats in Springfield have bigger problems to solve than tracking parents’ schooling decisions. This bill attempts to solve a problem that does not exist."

Public resistance has been strong against what many perceive as state overreach. Over 48,000 residents filed witness slips opposing HB 2827, and numerous individuals gathered at the State Capitol to voice their positive experiences with homeschooling.

"Placing children in public schools does not guarantee results or safety," Elik added. "I oppose forcing additional mandates on responsible parents."

The bill passed through the Education Policy Committee where Elik serves as House Republican Spokesman. Despite unanimous Republican opposition, it will now move forward to the House Floor for further voting. Those who oppose HB 2827 are encouraged to sign a petition and file a witness slip at ilga.gov.
