I am heading back to Springfield this week and anticipate a busy week, as this Friday is the deadline to pass Senate Bills through House committees. This update, I’ll let you know what I’ve been up to around the district, what’s going on in Springfield, and let you know what’s coming up.

At a Capitol news conference Thursday, Representative Elik joined Deputy Republican Leader Norine Hammond and Assistant Republican Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer to provide an update on the budget. "Last week, progressive Democrats ramped up their campaign for a graduated income tax hike," Elik stated, noting that Illinois voters had rejected a similar amendment in 2020. The Illinois Revenue Alliance has proposed tax hikes totaling $6 billion.

Elik criticized these proposals, saying they would impose new taxes on families and businesses to fund healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants and other spending programs. "These tax hikes would further damage our economy and drive up the cost of living for Illinois families," she said. She emphasized that discussions have not focused enough on high property taxes and living costs in Illinois.

In energy news, electric bills are expected to rise significantly this summer due to increased capacity prices reported by Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). Ameren, the largest utility in central and southern Illinois, warned customers of a 50% increase in electricity costs compared to last summer. This will result in consumer electric bills being 18% to 22% higher during summer 2025 than in the previous year.

Around the district, Elik hosted a Senior Fraud Protection Seminar with experts from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and Department on Aging. She also opposed HB 1237, known as the “Mascot Ban,” rallying with local leaders against it. Additionally, Elik visited St. Mary’s in Alton with former State Rep Dan Beiser to discuss state legislature roles with fourth-grade students.

At the Capitol, tributes were paid to police officers who died in service over the past year. Officers Averbeck and Lawson from Alton Police Department attended as K9 Odin was honored. Senator Erica Harriss joined Elik in welcoming Isaiah Stuckel from Alton Boys & Girls Club and Austin Nichols from Bethalto Boys & Girls Club; both were nominated for State Youth of the Year with Isaiah winning.

Elik met civics students from East Alton – Wood River High School at the Capitol and participated in honoring women leaders at the Women to Watch Leadership Conference. Amber Scott and Kristen Burns were recognized as honorees for their contributions.

Elik concluded her update by thanking readers for their attention and promising continued updates as legislative sessions progress.
