As the spring session in Illinois approaches its conclusion on May 31, significant legislative actions remain pending. Among these is a proposal by Democratic lawmakers to expand sales taxes to include services such as streaming, rideshares, and gym memberships, aiming to generate $2.7 billion statewide.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently criticized Illinois' sanctuary state policies during her visit to Springfield. She stated that these policies have resulted in violence against American citizens and shielded undocumented immigrants from legal consequences. "Illinois sanctuary state policies under fire from DHS Secretary," she said, emphasizing the need for policy changes.

State Representative Schmidt has co-sponsored legislation (HB 1317) aimed at repealing the Illinois TRUST Act, which restricts law enforcement agencies from collaborating with federal authorities on immigration matters.

The Illinois Revenue Alliance has proposed a new tax plan that could raise over $6 billion annually. This plan includes support from various unions and advocacy groups but faces opposition due to concerns about increasing financial burdens on residents.

In other news, Rep. Schmidt participated in the Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day rally at the Capitol this week, expressing support for Second Amendment rights.

Rep. Schmidt also invites nominations for local businesses in the 114th District to be recognized as Business of the Month through his social media platforms and local media outlets.

Public Works Week is being observed from May 18-24, highlighting essential services like clean water and safe roads that often go unnoticed but are crucial for community infrastructure.

For further updates or inquiries about legislative developments as the session nears its end, constituents can contact Rep. Schmidt's district office at 618-215-1050.
