Rep. Derrick Van Orden, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, addressed a hearing focused on the Department of Veterans’ Affairs' adaptive programs for disabled veterans. The session aimed to evaluate the efficiency of Specially Adapted Housing, Adaptive Automobile, and Adaptive Sports Programs in meeting the needs of veterans.

Van Orden emphasized the importance of these programs in supporting veterans' independence and quality of life. He stated, "I want to thank our witnesses for being here today to examine VA’s Special Adaptive Housing, Adaptive Automobile, and Adaptive Sports Programs to ensure these programs are effectively serving veterans across the country."

The Specially Adapted Housing Program is designed to help severely service-connected disabled veterans modify their homes for better accessibility. The program's goal is to enable veterans to live more independently.

The Adaptive Automobile Program offers vehicle modifications so that disabled veterans can operate vehicles safely and potentially rejoin the workforce. Meanwhile, the Adaptive Sports Program supports thousands of veterans by providing opportunities for participation in various sporting events which aid in improving mental health and wellness.

Van Orden also highlighted legislative efforts such as HR 522 and HR 1364 aimed at enhancing these adaptive programs. "HR 522, the Deliver for Veterans Act championed by my friend from the great territory of Guam, Representative Moylan, would cover the shipping cost of the delivery of an adaptive automobile," he noted.

He further expressed commitment towards bipartisan collaboration with Ranking Member Pappas: "I look forward to continuing the nonpartisan spirit of this Subcommittee with Ranking Member Pappas to ensure VA’s Adaptive Programs are modernized and work for the needs of today’s veterans."

In conclusion, Van Orden reiterated his dedication to focusing on oversight rather than political distractions: "Instead of focusing on political theater and soundbites, I will continue to lead this subcommittee towards working together to continue our mission."
