Illinois is facing significant financial and political challenges as the state budget vote approaches next week. The state is grappling with a $3.2 billion deficit, attributed to what some describe as irresponsible budgeting by the majority party. Efforts are being made to cut taxes and spending to foster a better environment for families and businesses.

As the legislative session nears its end in Springfield, lawmakers have four days left before the May 31 deadline to pass a state budget. The House has yet to receive a proposal from Democrat colleagues, while recent revenue projections for FY26 have been reduced by over $500 million by the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget. Republicans are standing firm against any tax increases during negotiations.

State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Millstadt) has chosen to donate his May pay raise to Hope Christian Church's Food Pantry in Freeburg. Since taking office, Rep. Schmidt has consistently donated his pay raises to local food pantries or non-profits after voting against legislative pay raises. "Hope Christian Church does an excellent job giving back to the community, and I’m happy to contribute," said Rep. Schmidt.

Under Governor Pritzker's administration, Illinois has spent more than $3 billion on services for migrants and illegal immigrants, raising concerns about underfunding essential services for vulnerable citizens. House Republicans advocate for immigration reform and a budget prioritizing Illinois families' needs.

Education funding in Illinois has increased; however, student performance remains unsatisfactory according to some lawmakers who call for efficient resource use to improve educational outcomes.

In business news, State Representative Kevin Schmidt recognized Freeburg Country Mart as May's “Business of the Month.” He commended General Managers Kathy Nordike & Scott Metzler for their service excellence and community commitment since 2018.

Memorial Day serves as a day of remembrance for those who sacrificed their lives in service of the United States, reminding citizens of their contributions toward current freedoms.

The importance of pollinators like bees is highlighted with gardens reaching peak bloom through late fall due to their efforts alongside warm weather conditions.
