State Representative Amy Elik, along with local and state leaders, marked the commencement of construction for the Byway Discovery Center at Piasa Creek. The groundbreaking event took place on June 11, 2025, setting the stage for a project expected to be completed by spring 2026.

The center is strategically located along the scenic Great Rivers Road near Lockhaven Road and aims to attract more tourists to the Riverbend area. It will function as a visitors’ center, featuring a gift shop, exhibit space, lecture facilities, and public restrooms. Open every day of the week, it will be managed by staff from the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau and community volunteers.

During the ceremony, Rep. Elik expressed her enthusiasm about the initiative: “This center will be a gateway to understanding the incredible cultural and historical stories that have shaped our communities along the Mississippi River,” she said. She emphasized that from early settlers to thriving river towns today, "this region has always had a story worth telling." Elik encouraged continued development in the Riverbend area to highlight its offerings.
