High energy prices remain a concern for families throughout Illinois. House Republicans are advocating for the use of all available energy sources, such as coal and natural gas, to reduce costs and provide reliable energy access.
Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia) has expressed support for comprehensive reform of state energy policies. "I support using all available sources of energy to keep costs down for Illinois residents, including coal and natural gas. Elected officials in Illinois must take action on reforming energy policies now. We have answers, now we need bipartisan support and action. This issue could be addressed during veto session, but we will see what the Democrats focus on," Schmidt said.
Several bills have been proposed as part of these efforts:
- HB1544 would amend the Environmental Protection Act to extend deadlines by five years for achieving reduced or zero carbon dioxide emissions.
- HB1545 proposes a ten-year extension on similar emission reduction deadlines.
- HB1546 would allow certain electric generating units that use coal an additional five years to meet emissions goals.
- HB1547 seeks a ten-year extension for large greenhouse gas-emitting units and specific electric generating facilities.
- SB76 aims to expand new nuclear power plants in the state.
Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative in 2023 to serve Illinois’ 114th House District, succeeding LaToya Greenwood. More information about his background can be found at https://www.ilga.gov/house/Rep.asp?GA=103&MemberID=3212.
