November 10, 2025, marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. The date commemorates the founding of the Marine Corps during the Revolutionary War, when a committee of the Second Continental Congress called for two battalions of Marines to support naval forces. This resolution was adopted on November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia, creating what would become one of the world’s most recognized military branches.

Since its establishment, the Marine Corps has evolved from supporting naval operations to becoming an independent fighting force known for rapid deployment and amphibious assaults. In World War I, Marines earned respect for their actions at Belleau Wood in France. It was there that Captain Lloyd Williams famously responded to a suggestion to retreat by saying: “Retreat, hell! We just got here!”

The Marine Corps played a significant role in many American conflicts. During World War II in the Pacific Theater, battles such as Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa highlighted their contributions. The image of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima became an enduring symbol and is featured at the Marine Corps Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Today’s Marine Corps continues to adapt by performing combat and non-combat missions. These include humanitarian aid after natural disasters, evacuating U.S. citizens from dangerous situations, and providing security at more than 180 embassies worldwide. The branch also participates in counter-narcotics and anti-trafficking efforts both domestically and abroad.

“Our service members have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we all enjoy in America,” said State Rep. Kevin Schmidt. “The Marines deserve to be honored today for their bravery and commitment to serve our great country.”

As Americans mark this milestone birthday of the Marine Corps, they are reminded of its long-standing motto: “Semper Fidelis,” meaning “always faithful.” The nation reflects on those who have served under its emblem over two and a half centuries.

Schmidt is a Republican who was elected to represent Illinois’ 114th House District in 2023, succeeding LaToya Greenwood.
