Pritzker’s recent comments about the Democratic Party “delivering for the people” of Illinois have drawn criticism from Republican lawmakers, who argue that state policies are worsening affordability issues. Governor JB Pritzker stated, “I think that is what the Democratic Party is all about, delivering for the people. And here in Illinois, we’ve been doing that, I’ve been doing that for the last several years.”

Opponents point to recent legislative actions as evidence to the contrary. During a veto session, Democrats passed an $8 billion package described by critics as a “Green New Giveaway,” which they say will increase energy costs for residents. Additionally, a $2.5 billion bailout for Chicago Transit was approved, involving tax increases and a 60% toll hike.

State Representative Kevin Schmidt said these measures directly affect his district. “We have witnessed overspending and lack of attention to communities that need relief the most,” Schmidt said. “Democrat policies are not helping struggling families who are trying to get ahead and pay their bills. We need real change, real solutions, and real conversations about helping the taxpayers of Illinois.”

Schmidt was elected in 2023 to represent Illinois’ 114th House District after replacing LaToya Greenwood.

House Republicans say they are proposing alternatives aimed at addressing cost-of-living concerns. Among these is Representative Regan Deering’s HB 3543 bill, which would create a Cost of Living Task Force to identify factors behind rising expenses and suggest reforms intended to lower costs statewide.

Republicans argue that while Governor Pritzker’s administration has raised taxes and costs, their focus remains on making life more affordable for Illinois families.
