U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) released a statement and video on Veterans Day to honor America's veterans.
Kirk, who served 23 years in the Navy Reserves, said taking up veteran's issues in the Senate is his way of giving back to fellow veterans.
"Today we honor the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who wore the uniform to defend our freedom and keep us safe," Kirk said. "Our heroes deserve better than to be treated as second-class citizens, which is why I'm leading the charge to investigate misconduct and intimidation at Veteran Administration (VA) hospitals like Hines in Illinois."
As chairman of the Senate Appropriation Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, Kirk led a hearing on reports of mistreatment of veterans at the Edward Hines, Jr., VA Hospital near Maywood, Illinois. Last week, the Senate passed three Kirk-authored pieces of legislation to honor veterans.
Kirk spoke to 700,000 veterans at the City of Chicago's annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Soldier Field and the City of Winnetka's Veterans Day Celebration,
