Rauner grants clemency in 10 cases while denying 200 others

Illinoisgovernment

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner recently decided to grant clemency in 10 cases, denying 200 others, in a major move on the clemency petitions front.

With nearly 1,200 petitions remaining from previous petitions, this is a key announcement.

The 1,200 petitions are part of dockets dating all the way back to 2007. The move is the governor’s fifth set of clemency petitions acted on since he took office. The governor’s office looks to review clemency petitions on a regular basis and has developed a process for doing so.

Each person granted clemency underwent a criminal background check through the Illinois State Police’s Law Enforcement Agencies Data system.

A petitioner, after granted clemency for a pardon with expungement, can seek to expunge their conviction in the court system.
