The Appearance Review Commission for the City of Alton, Illinois assembled recently to discuss the appearance of several properties in the city.

Savannah Rigley, of Rebuilding Together, presented an application for 1305 E. 4th Street. Her group would be replacing stairs, decking and railing on the back porch. According to her report, the construction would use pressure-treated lumber and the finished deck would be four feet by eight feet.

A motion was presented to accept these plans, with the amendment that Building and Zoning will make inspections during progress to make sure everything is being built to code. The motion passed unanimously.

Paul Light of Shakers at 554 E. Broadway then presented a plan for a new sign. His “shakers” logo would be made of vinyl, would lay flat on the awning anchored to the metal frame, and be either three feet by six feet or four feet by eight feet. A motion was presented to accept the application and it passed unanimously.

Board member Michael Doucleff excused himself from the committee, and then presented an amendment to a building application made back in July for Duke’s at 819 Henry. His initial application included three awnings for his property, but he instead wanted one long one. A motion was made to approve this amendment and it passed unanimously, with Doucleff recusing himself.
