SIU announces 50th annual Belleville Field Day
Reflecting on farming paths both past and future, Southern Illinois University (SIU) staffers are preparing for the 50th annual Carbondale College agricultural science event — Belleville Field Day — on July 14 at its Belleville Research Center.
Beginning with an 8 a.m. welcome, sessions will start at 9 a.m. and continue until noon. Subjects range from crop preparation and research to climate and drone applications, with presentations by eminent researchers, professors, industry professionals and a National Weather Service forecaster.
Programs will include information on managing nitrogen for corn by SIU’s Emerson Nafziger; weeding advice with SIU’s Karla Gage and Ron Krausz; 2017’s outlook for crop yield by SIU’s Gary Schnitkey; and 21st century UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) applications with Auburn University’s Chris Clemons.
Additionally, SIU’s Jason Bond and Linda Kull of the Illinois Soybean Association will speak on 50 years of successful soybean research.
The event’s organizers have done the legwork for participants to earn two continuing education units for attending the field day. SIU’s Belleville Research Center is located on Illinois 161 south of the Scott Air Force Base-Mascoutah Gate at 2036 Charles Lane, Belleville.
Used extensively for both research and teaching, the Belleville Center includes a total of 183 acres; 75 of which are devoted to crop production and small plot research.
