Southern Illinois-Edwardsville senior defender Austin Ledbetter has been put on the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy in men's soccer, according to www.siuecougars.com.
The trophy is awarded annually to the best player in NCAA Division I men's soccer. Ledbetter is one of 28 players to make the list, which was recently released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The list will be cut to 15 players near the end of the season by participating coaches. Fans will be able to vote for their top semifinalists on the Hermann Trophy website in November. Three finalists will be selected after that; the award winner will be announced Jan. 6, 2017.
Last season, Ledbetter was an All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. He was named to the NSCAA All-West Region first team and was a huge part of the Cougars defense that was seventh in the nation with a 0.64 goals-against average.
The Cougars open the regular season by hosting Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. Aug. 26. For more information, go to www.siuecougars.com.
