YOUTH SERVICES REPORT

August 2016

The 2016 summer reading program “Be Like a Superhero-Read for the Win” ended in July with a bang-up finale program. We had special guests attend the beginning of our finale. Batman and Super Girl enchanted the children with their presence. Not only were there photo opportunities for the parents and children, but our superheroes shared their experiences and danced with the kids. They left before our pizza was delivered, since they had to fight off enemies.

The over-all consensus to my new format for finale prizes was enthusiastically welcomed by the children and parents. They totally loved earning reward tickets throughout the program. Each reward ticket earned was placed in the corresponding prize jar. This enabled them to read and “go for the prize!” There were many opportunities to earn these tickets, such as: scavenger hunts, guessing jars, contests, craft & movie participation, reading books, wearing superhero clothes, and donating canned goods for the Community Hope Food Pantry.

Lots of wonderful prizes were given out. Each participant also received a goody bag filled with prizes and candy. I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s theme. So much fun and enthusiasm involved! Photos for all of our programs are on our Facebook page.

The agenda and curriculum for July is noted below.

Date Performer Crafts & Activities Movie

7/5-7/7 Juggling Jeff Superhero Scenes TMNT

7/12 Batman & Super Girl Finale Pizza & Prizes

Weeding out particularly old and worn out books in the elementary, juvenile, and young adult areas. Replacing some books if they are not out of print.

Working on the sponsor/donation letter to be presented to area businesses. Continuing to comprise a list of businesses and their addresses.

The movie matinee continues throughout August until school begins. Then the movie times will go back to the family movie nights once a month. Submitted by Maury Reynolds
