East Alton mayoral hopeful targets taxes, roads

Property tax 6

Jamie Goodwin believes East Alton’s property taxes should be lower and roads should be better, and that the city also needs more funding for police patrols to reduce crime

For those reasons and more, Goodwin has thrown her hat into the mayoral ring.

“While I have not held public office before, I was a staff senator at [Southern Illinois University]-Edwardsville and have even worked as a U.S. congressional intern,” Goodwin said. “I have lived in the East Alton-Wood River area for 30 years. In addition, I have spent almost 15 years in higher education, having spent the majority of those years working in human resources, which is experience that would prove beneficial as mayor of East Alton.”

Goodwin knows some things about improving infrastructure as well. She initiated the “Save the Citizens Bank Building” effort that saved the historical building from demolition, and she is eyeing a revitalization of Berkshire Boulevard with marketing for the bank building building to help spur economic growth.

She also says top administrator salaries, with the exception of first responders, could be on the chopping block as she seeks ways to pay for city improvements.

Goodwin earned her master’s degree in business administration from Webster University and her bachelor’s in political science with a minor in economics from SIU-Edwardsville. She works as a human resources coordinator.
