Two bills pave way for Route 66 centennial celebration

Route 66(1000)

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) and state Rep. Avery Bourne (R-Raymond) promoted national legislation that would help mark the 100th anniversary of Route 66 during a stop at the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center recently.

Two pieces of legislation, both introduced by Illinois lawmakers, would lay the groundwork for centennial celebrations in 2026. Davis introduced House Resolution 66, which would create a national commission to work on the anniversary, and has also voiced support for House Resolution 801, introduced by U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL), to designate Route 66 a National Historic Trail.

"Our goal with this legislation is to highlight what Route 66 means to our nation's history, and to tourism," Davis said.

Bourne said the Illinois General Assembly is also preparing for the anniversary, with the House already passing legislation to create a state commission.

Litchfield Museum Board President Martha Jackson thanked the legislators for their visit and highlighted the opportunities available to tourists traveling the road through Montgomery County.

"We're glad you're interested in Route 66; there's a lot of things to do on Route 66," Jackson said. "Everything that is done in this museum is volunteer help -- even the person who mows the grass."
