Analysis: Sales tax funded 4 percent of Village of Cahokia budget in 2016

The Village of Cahokia's local sales tax brought in $541,618 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Cahokia, population 15,241, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 4 percent of total revenue that year.

Cahokia levies a 0.75 percent sales tax. The average of four suburbs in St. Clair County is 0.68. The high is 1 percent; the low is 0.25 percent.

Metro East Sun analyzed the sales tax collections in four St. Clair County suburbs and found they generated a total of $13,136,821 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 9% spent by local government.
