Wood River FD responds to 53 fires in 2016

Wood River Fire Department responded to 131 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Metro East Sun.

The calls in Wood River included 53 fires - 26 structure fires, five vehicle fires and 19 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $342,479 in fire loss - or about $6,462 per fire.

The department also received 78 false calls, including one malicious call and 77 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, three fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Wood River Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 10 active employees and 11 retired or inactive employees, was $464,732 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $8,769 for every fire in 2016.
