City of Edwardsville City Council met Oct. 3.
Here is the minutes provided by the Council:
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Edwardsville City Council was held at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers with Mayor Patton presiding. Aldermen Louer, Stack, Burns, Risavy, Morrison, Krause and Farrar answered present on roll call.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all present.
Mayor Patton asked for a moment of silence in regards to the tragedy in Las Vegas.
Mayor Patton read the following letter written by Jerry Broadway:
Dear America,
Stop.
Stop hating. Stop belittling those who disagree with you. Stop identifying yourselves by the color of your skin. Stop being divided by people who get rich off divisiveness.
Stop ignoring the mentally ill among you. Stop looking the other way when someone you care about shows signs that they are troubled in some way. While you're at it, stop using the deaths of dozens of your fellow Americans to try and advance your political stance.
Stop caring about other people’s political stances. Realize that nobody cares about yours. Stop living in a world where you are right and all who do not fall in lockstep with you are evil, unpatriotic, or just plain stupid. Stop refusing to entertain the thought that maybe it's your idea that is bad, or at the very least, needs tweaking. Butlet's not stop there. Stop feeling superior to your fellow Americans. On the inside, we're all the same. Look at your television. The blood you see flowing from the veins of the white man is the same shade of red that flows from the veins of the black man. And too much of that blood is shed here every day. Not white blood. Not black blood. American blood.
Stop believing that the 2nd Amendment is the end-all be-all of life in America. You can’t scream "Ban all guns' every time a shooting happens, but you can't scream “No gun laws' every time the subject is broached. Sensible people have to agree that we all have the right to own weapons, but sensible people should also agree that we need some safeguards in place.
Stop saying “when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns'. True or not, no one ever solved a national problem with a bumper sticker. Stop believing that the blackman always gets a fair shake in this country. Stop believing that the blackman NEVER gets a fair shake in this country. Both are false narratives.
Stop believing, creating, and sustaining false narratives. Stop acting like the middle ground is a place for gutless people who have sold their souls to reside. The middle ground, devoid of bumper sticker slogans, is where the great problem solvers go to meet, discuss, compromise, and solve problems.
Stop saying that people who don't agree with your politics should die. No one should die for their politics. No one. Ever. Stop believing that the first amendment only applies to thoughts you agree with. If you get offended, rub your offended spot and move on. Remember, somewhere out there, someone is offended by your thoughts, too. Stop watching Fox News and CNN, and any other alphabet organization that wants you to be angry so you won't stop watching. They don’t care about you. They care about ratings.
Stop bashing the President. Love him or hate him, he's yours for the remainder of his term. Disagree with him if you want. Disagree with him out loud if you want. But be respectful about it. Stop teaching your kids that authority is badjust because your candidate didn't win,
Stop teaching your children that the police are all bad. Some are. No argument there. But some teachers, firemen, postal workers, and preachers are bad, too. Just because you don't like someone telling you what to do (follow the law), you have no right to judge that person's character. Stop refusing to admit that some police are bad people. Stop being angry about things that meam nothing to you, just because a celebrity said you should be angry about it.
My beloved fellow Americans, once you, and I, have stopped all these things, there is but one thing on the list of things we need to START.
Start following the direction of Jesus. It doesn't matter if you believe in Him or not. What matters is the simple beauty in his command to "love your brother as yourself.” What a world it would be if we could find it in ourselves to do so.
-Jerry Broadway
