Donald Moore puts his family first — but sometimes that means all of Illinois.

The 108th House District told the Metro East Sun that he is so committed to his core beliefs that he wouldn't let a recent family vacation interfere with him fighting for the people.

"When I learned that Mr. Charlie Meier voted this past July to approve the Illinois budget — a budget that Gov. Rauner and many Republicans have been fighting for the past two years — I became energized," Moore said. "I called up Rep. Meier that evening while vacationing with my family."

Though Moore has been a lifelong Illinois resident who was raised in Caseyville, he did not become involved in politics until November 2016, when he was elected to the Madison County Board.

Shortly afterward, the Illinois Opportunity Project (IOP) contacted Moore about running against Meier (R-Okawville), but Moore had to check with his family before committing.

"We all agreed, and I called the IOP on Monday morning to let them know I had made the decision to challenge Rep. Meier," Moore said.

Moore has been building a support base and spreading his core beliefs: unwavering conservative principles, putting taxpayers first, balancing the budget, supporting term limits, the anti-abortion movement and the Second Amendment.

"At this point, I am accumulating signatures for my petition to run for Illinois state representative," Moore said. "My priority now is to continue asking for signatures of registered voters within the 108th District."

A retired U.S. Marine, Moore still carries many of the values he learned serving the country.

"I never give up in the pursuit of a cause because that is something l learned from being a U. S. Marine, and it is also something that I teach my daughters," Moore said. "Something else I learned as a U. S. Marine is that no one can take your integrity from you.  In order for you to lose your integrity, you must give it away. I guard it closely."

If elected, Moore will assume the position currently held by Charles Meier (R-Okawville).

The 108th District covers the counties of Clinton, Eastern Madison, Eastern St. Clair, and most of Washington County.
