Alton Appearance Review Commission met February 28.
Here is the minutes as provided by the commission:
Members Present: Debbie Schuneman, Mike Doucleff, Barb Gearing, Gen Gearing,
Margaret Hopkins, Kim Lane, Nick Moehn
Others Present: Skylar Sackett, Katie Matthews, Sam Shaw, Building Inspector, Becky
Brunaugh, Secretary
A meeting of the Appearance Review Commission was held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.
Debbie Schuneman called the meeting to order at 8:04.
Nick Moehn made a motion to accept the minutes from the January 17, 2018 meeting as
amended. Kim Lane seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
New Business:
Skylar Sackett with Zac’s Hookah Lounge presented the application for 556 E. Broadway. He
is proposing a sign, 3’ x 8’, to hang on the front of the building, centered above where the current
awning is placed. The sign will be aluminum and vinyl, black with red lettering reading “Zac’s
Hookah Lounge” and pictures of hookahs, and will be illuminated. The current awning is to be
removed.
Nick Moehn made a motion to approve the removal of the current awning. Margaret Hopkins
seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Nick Moehn made a motion to approve the sign application as presented. Margaret Hopkins
seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Katie Matthews with Crown Vision Center presented the application for 406 E. Broadway. She
is proposing a sign reading “Crown Vision Center”. It will be comprised of individual white
letters that will be backlit connected with a band behind the lettering. Length of the letters is
127.5”. This will be mounted on the existing awning centered over the door.
Barb Gearing made a motion to accept the application as presented. Mike Doucleff seconded the
motion. Motion passed unanimously.
Other Business:
It was decided that letters will go out to businesses that have put up signs without Appearance
Review approval stating that they have 30 (thirty) days to present an application or remove their
signs. Decaro’s and Merle Norman are of current concern.
Becky Brunaugh will check with the Business Licensing department to see if there is a checklist
for new businesses regarding possible Appearance Review application and approval process.
There being no further discussion or comments from the public, the meeting was adjourned at
8:44 a.m.
