Belleville Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on June 19.
High school seniors Cecilia Maue from Belleville East and Charles Parrish from Freeburg Community High School were chosen as Memorial Foundation’s Scholar Athletes of the Year.
The scholar athlete program, sponsored by Memorial Foundation in cooperation with Memorial Rehab and Sports Medicine and Memorial Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine recognizes one male and one female senior scholar athlete from a high school in Memorial’s primary and selected secondary service area. The weekly award winners from September 2017 through April 2018 were eligible for one of two $1,500 scholarships awarded in May.
Nominated by her mother Sue Maue, Cecilia had a 4.7 GPA and was a member of the varsity soccer team. She had received 2017 Southwestern Conference 3rd Team and Scholar Athlete Character Award four years in a row. She was a 2018-2019 State Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society including Science, Spanish and Math Honor Societies. She volunteered with Make a Wish Foundation, Tour de Belleville and Granite City Military Appreciation Day.
Charles was nominated by his Guidance Counselor, Anne Meinert and had a 5.2 GPA and was a member of the cross-country and track teams. He was two time all-state in cross-country; 7th at 2017 state meet as well as other various state and all-conference honors. Charlie took all honors and AP courses. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and competed in Youth in Science/Engineering team.
