Wood River FD responds to 67 fires in 2017

Wood River Fire Department responded to 143 calls in 2017 - 9.2 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Wood River included 67 fires - 37 structure fires, three vehicle fires and 27 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $214,902 in fire loss - or about $3,207 per fire.

The department also received 73 false calls, including three malicious calls and 70 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, three fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Wood River Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 10 active employees and 11 retired or inactive employees, was $464,732 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $9,295 for every fire in 2016.
