St. Elizabeth's Hospital issued the following announcement on Sept. 7.
HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital recently awarded Erin Manka, RN, the national DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Erin has served as a Registered Nurse for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for 14 years and serves as a charge nurse and as a facilitator in the emergency department. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's nationwide program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination was submitted by a fellow colleague who views Manka as a mentor and excellent role model.
The nomination shared, “Erin is the hardest working, dedicated, compassionate nurse that I know. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do to help others and she always makes sure everything is running smoothly to provide the best patient care possible. Since my first day of orientation, Erin has served as an excellent role model for me. I can’t thank her enough for all she has helped me accomplish. I’m just one of the hundreds of colleagues and patients in which Erin has had a positive impact. Erin also consistently puts service before self for all of her fellow colleagues and patients. One case that stands out in my mind, was when Erin went above and beyond to care for a severe trauma patient. The situation wasn’t easy, but with her unwavering determination, excellent leadership ability and compassion the patient’s life was saved. When I learned about this national award, I knew I needed to nominate Erin.”
A total of seven dedicated nurses were also recognized for receiving additional individual nominations for this quarter. These colleagues include: Marnie Lysaker and Traci Wood, (Women and Infants Center), Ben Hyatt (Telemetry A); Christy Hunter (Medical/Surgical Unit); Alisa Glass (Surgery) Kristina Bloomfield and Angela Capps (Emergency Department).
Additionally, just as a daisy cannot survive without a bee, nurses cannot survive without the outstanding teamwork provided by support colleagues. As such, Roseann Rowan and Dennis Howard of the sterile processing department recently received St. Elizabeth’s Being Extraordinary Everyday (BEE) Award. Both were nominated for also putting service before self, and going above and beyond to provide the best service possible for patients, colleagues and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital as a whole.
Additional colleagues recognized for BEE nominations include: Belinda Miller, Carolyn “Cee Cee” Jackson, Kemba Kennedy (Medical Surgical Unit); Crystal Crays (Endoscopy); Linda Yanicheck (Volunteer/Outpatient Surgery); Jessie Minor (Environmental Services); Iko Essien (Emergency Department) and Robyn Kessler (Rehab).
Distribution of the nationally-recognized DAISY Award and the BEE Award at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital have been made possible through funds provided by HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Foundation.
Nominations for future DAISY and BEE Awards at St. Elizabeth’s continue to be accepted. Patients and visitors are encouraged to share and submit their story of witnessing excellent and compassionate care from staff.
