Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) women’s soccer coach Derek Burton still holds out hope for his Cougars' entering the postseason, despite the team’s rough end to the regular season.

“Really the results from the past 21/2 months don’t matter at this point,” Burton said in a video posted to the team’s Facebook page. “We want to keep working on ourselves, getting better in areas we need to, buttoning some things up and being detail-oriented in our focus.”

SIUE opens the postseason against Morehead State, and Burton insists his team has plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

“It’s a new season essentially,” he added. “We flip the page from where we ended, get back on the right foot.”

Burton hinted that all starts with the Lady Cougars feeling good about themselves.

“Just working on our confidence, we’re doing enough to score goals,” he said. “It’s not for a lack of anything else, just that final piece.”
