Belleville Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on Dec. 5.
Erin Klasing of Okawville and Cole Junker of Mascoutah have been named Memorial Foundation Scholar Athletes of the Month for November.
Klasing, a senior at Okawville High School, has a 3.98 GPA and participates in golf, basketball and softball. She has received numerous awards for her golf abilities and served as captain of the golf team and co-captain of the basketball team. Klasing is president of the National Honor Society, is a member of Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, Quill and Scroll journalism honor society, vice president of the music honor society Tri-M, and a member of Varsity Worldwide Youth Science and Engineering. In addition, she serves as assistant yearbook editor, is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, band, chorus, Science Club, Spanish Club, Drama Club, Illinois Girls State Delegate and Voice of Democracy essay winner. Klasing is a member of the Busy Bees 4-H Club where she has served as treasurer and vice president, she is a volunteer for the Southern Illinois Special Olympics, Senior Citizen Club community auctions and picnics, assists with golf, basketball and softball camps for grade school students, is a member of her church youth group, teaches Vacation Bible School and has participated in mission trips and other activities. She plans to pursue a degree in Actuarial Science and would like to find employment in the insurance, finance or investment industry.
Junker, a senior at Mascoutah High School maintains a 4.03 GPA while participating in swimming, football and soccer. He has earned numerous awards for his athletic ability including being a six-time state qualifier for swimming, Ozark Record Holder in the 100 IM, first team all-area punter; second team all-conference punter and honorable mention all-conference goalie and forward. Junker is a member of the National Honor Society, USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, Fellowship of Christian Athletes president, member of Student Council, Model UN and Spanish Club. He was a contestant for Mr. Mascoutah to raise money for charity and is a member of both the Young Republicans and Young Democrats. He has been a part of the Freshman Mentoring Program for two years, is a volunteer swim coach for Kingspoint Swim Club and worked with specific youth from Don Boscoe/Caritas home in Belleville as part of the DCFS definition as “fictive kin” mentoring a family dynamic to help his placement. Junker has participated in the Youth Leadership Program with Belarus and US State Department. He has served as an assistant coach for Belle Clair Soccer League and is a lifeguard. He plans to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas next fall for swimming. Junker plans to major in marketing with an emphasis in sports marketing. He also is considering joining the Air Force ROTC program at SMU.
The scholar athlete program, sponsored by Memorial Foundation in cooperation with Memorial Rehab and Sports Medicine and BJC Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine recognizes one male and one female senior scholar athlete from a high school in Memorial’s primary and selected secondary service area. The monthly award winners from September 2018 through April 2019 will be eligible for one of two $1,500 scholarships to be awarded in May 2019.
