City of Alton Appearance Review Commission met July 3.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

MEMBERS PRESENT: Debbie Schuneman, Mike Doucleff, Barb Gearing, Gen Gearing, Margaret Hopkins, Nick Moehn

OTHERS PRESENT: Sydnie Rushing, Tracey Rice, Jimi Sinks, Sam Shaw – Building Inspector, Becky Brunaugh – Secretary

A meeting of the Appearance Review Commission was held on Wednesday, July 3, 2019. Chairwoman Debbie Schuneman called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m.

Barb Gearing made a motion to approve the minutes from May 22, 2019 as presented. Margaret Hopkins seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

APPLICATIONS:

Sydnie Rushing presented the application for 11 E. Broadway. She is proposing to paint the building all Corduroy Black, with Hopsack trim on the windows and doors. A sign, 120” x 15”, 1⁄2 inch thick letters painted gold metallic, reading “RUSHMORE” will be affixed directly to the building above the door. Wood window boxes will be added to all of the front windows.

Barb Gearing made a motion to approve the application as presented. Gen Gearing seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Tracey Rice presented the application for 101 W. 9th St. A neon sign reading “Shake Rattle N Roll” will be in magenta and blue, PVC based aluminum clad, similar to Tony’s in downtown Alton. It will measure 126” x 18”. Three menu boards will be illuminated by existing lights. A fence, 40’ long, will run between ACT building and 101 W. 9th St. made of 6’, white vinyl privacy panels.

Nick Moehn made a motion to approve the application as presented. Gen Gearing seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Jimi Sinks presented the application for 301 E. Broadway. She is proposing a painted wood sign reading Big Boyz BBQ be hung on the left side of the door at Mineral Springs Mall. It is a sign that was used at their previous location. Mike Doucleff expressed concern over a lack of uniformity. Sam suggested putting the sign on the right side of the door to address this concern.

Margaret Hopkins made a motion to approve the sign being hung on the right side of the door. Barb Gearing seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Debbie Schuneman has been asked about the sign at Mac’s on Third Street. She wants the commissioners to be prepared for public comment when Mac comes before the commission for façade changes.

Debbie Schuneman asked about Damien Jones’ application for Appearance Review commissioner. Becky Brunaugh will check with the Mayor’s office regarding this matter.

John Simmons may be erecting a new sign at Miller’s Mutual at 111 W. 4th St. Sam Shaw will look into this matter.

There being no further discussion or comment from the public, the meeting was adjourned at 8:47 a.m.
