City of Alton issued the following announcement on April 30.
In 2019, the City of Alton embarked on its Great Streets Project, a partnership initiative funded by the City of Alton and Illinois State Planning and Research funds seeking to:
“Outline a path towards a livable Downtown destination by reconnecting public assets, strengthening downtown’s resiliency, enhancing the Alton brand and improving safety and connectivity”... by reflecting…”the will of the people of the Alton community”.
Since this work formally commenced, a number of public meetings have been held in Alton and an ongoing online presence has also been maintained to continuously gather input from the public, with this latter aspect of course being even more critical recently with the Covid-19 impacts.
Through this process, which has involved consulting expertise from: licensed professional engineers; landscape architects, architects; economic consultants; and, others all providing input to the public process, several suggested changes to streets in the City have been developed. These possible changes have included the consideration of improvements to Broadway, Landmarks Boulevard, Piasa (U.S. 67) and the Great River Road (U.S. 100) as well as recommendations to assist the City in outlining a path towards a livable and vibrant downtown with goals of:
- Improving walkability, wayfinding, safety and connectivity in connecting the downtown districts to each other and to the riverfront.
- Enhancing the Alton brand through signage and gateways; Re-thinking the composition of the Broadway street right-of-way; and
- Strengthening downtown’s resiliency and economic development potential.

GREAT STREETS – FINAL SURVEY AND VIDEOS!
Take the following survey to give your input one last time before recommendations are finalized in May. There have been two public workshops as part of this process to date. The team has taken the input from these workshops to identify goals and objectives for the plan and revising the recommendations based on your priorities and preferences. The following survey hopes to finalize a few of these ideas with video questions. Take the survey here!
Please note that the "possibilities" you will see in this survey and supporting materials referenced above are not formal "proposals." The ideas portrayed will need further study; therefore, these ideas are not endorsed by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The intent is to understand if these ideas are something the public would like to see further investigated.
