State Sen. Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) has taken steps to secure the rights of parents in her state while continuing her crusade to end what she believes is government overreach at the hands of Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) by filing Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment (SJRCA 12).
SJRCA 12 would protect the rights of parents who have minor children when it comes to their education and healthcare, according to a press release issued by Bryant's office.
"This legislation seeks to preserve a parent's decision-making authority regarding their child's education and healthcare," Bryant wrote in a Sept. 2 Facebook post. "Throughout this pandemic, we've seen countless examples of the government's disregard for the rights of Illinois parents. Enough is enough. Parents have a right to be involved and have a say in the education and wellbeing of their child."
SJRCA 12 would add a new section to the Illinois Bill of Rights, according to a press release from Bryant's office.
The release noted that Republican lawmakers in the state legislature have been critical of Gov. Pritzker's ongoing unilateral approach to the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how to mitigate the spread of the virus.
The amendment was filed on Aug. 31, according to the press release.
