Shiloh Community Unit School District No. 1 is cancelling finals for the school district’s high school to combat COVID.

The St. Clear County-based school district made the announcement Thursday.

“There will be NO high school final exams this December. Due to the number of students who are in quarantine finals will be canceled. The exception will be for dual credit classes where finals are required. These finals will be given as planned,” a statement by Superintendent Dr. Allen Hall, Principal Beth Harbaugh and Assistant Principal Amy Jones said.

The trio also notified parents that school will dismisss early at 2 p.m. every day in January when students return from winter break.

“When we return to school on January 4th, we will dismiss school at 2:05 every day until further notice. Due to the rising number of quarantines and COVID cases, the school board made this change to accommodate disinfecting and preparing work for quarantined students,” the statement reads.

The move comes just after Illinois School Report Card revealed steep learning declines in the state’s student population.

English and Math declines were 17 and 85 statewide.

While finals have been suspended, the school’s extracurricular activities, such as the Winter Concert, the junior high reward lunch and high school reward breakfast will be held.

The school district is not the first in the state to change student requirements due to the pandemic

Glenbard School District 87 Superintendent David Larson earlier this year encouraged his teachers to "be creative” when grading.
