The top-ranked and defending NCAA national champion McKendree University women's bowling team continued its 2022-23 season here Friday afternoon by posting a 4-1 record on the first day of the Track Kat Klash held at the Emerald Bowl and hosted by fifth-ranked Sam Houston State.
Along with posting a 4-1 record in their five Baker matches, the Bearcats are second overall in the 20-team event with a total pinfall of 5,266 as they averaged 210.6 per game on Friday. McKendree recorded over 1,000 pins in four of its five Baker games and is one of seven teams in the event that recorded over 5,000 pins in Baker play on Friday.
On Friday, the Bearcats opened with a 1,149-996 win over eighth-ranked Louisiana Tech, before suffering a hard-fought 960-943 loss to 17th-ranked Tulane in its second game. In the third game against Alabama A&M, the Bearcats earned a 1,077-889 win, before collecting a 1,048-963 win over the host school, Sam Houston State and ended the first day with a 1,049-863 win over 24th-ranked Lincoln Memorial.
The Bearcats will play five traditional games on Saturday as they will open the day with a match against Southern (La.) University, before facing Prairie View A&M, Alabama State, third-ranked Nebraska and Texas Southern. The traditional format games are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Maryville, who went 4-1 on Friday, sits atop the team leaderboard with a total pinfall of 5,322.
Seventh-ranked North Carolina A&T is in third with a total pinfall of 5,182 after going 5-0 on the first day of action and Sam Houston State, who went 2-3 on the day, sits in fourth place with a total pinfall of 5,155.
Results from Friday's Baker games and Saturday's traditional game will determine the seeding for Sunday's bracket play. During the championship bracket play on Sunday, each team will play three best-four-of-seven Baker style matches.
