Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Military and Veteran Resource Center (MAVRC) helps all military-connected students who walk through the door. Located in the Morris University Center, the resource center is equipped with resources and supportive experts that aid students with enrollment, benefits and other questions. The space also helps build community, connecting with other military-connected students who share similar experiences.
“As a veteran, it not only means a lot to have served our country, but also to serve my fellow veterans who come to SIUE,” said Kevin Wathen, director of SIUE Military and Veteran Services. “Our work centers on how we can make sure military-connected students feel appreciated and welcome.”
“From the very beginning of their educational journey, we help eliminate any roadblocks to help them reach our commencement stage and earn their degree,” Wathen added.
Leading up to the national Veteran’s Day holiday, numerous events were held throughout the week to honor veterans’ service and sacrifice, including MAVRC’s Honoring Veterans Event, Life After Serving discussion at the Edwardsville Public Library, the SIUE Student Government Veterans Day Luncheon, and Veteran’s Care Day hosted by the SIU School of Dental Medicine.
“This week as we focused on our veterans, the campus community took time to step back and reflect on what veterans have contributed to this country through their military service,” said Telisha Reinhardt, assistant director of Military and Veteran Services.
The Office of Military and Veteran Services recently gained national recognition from the Military Times’ Best for Vets Colleges ranking. The award underscores the University’s commitment to connecting military and the civilian world. Additionally, in 2020, Military and Veteran Services developed its Green Zone program, a military culture awareness training module for faculty and staff. It launched in spring 2021 with nearly 40 faculty and staff participants.
