Elik expressed her concerns about the increasing costs of providing free Medicaid healthcare benefits to undocumented immigrant adults aged 42 and above. The resolution, numbered 165, was introduced by Elik at the Legislative Audit Commission's November meeting. It requires the Illinois Auditor General to conduct a comprehensive audit of the Department of Healthcare and Family Services' Medicaid Benefits for Undocumented Immigrants. The audit will examine the actual versus estimated number of enrollees and costs over the past three years.
The Legislative Audit Commission, responsible for overseeing the State Audit Program, is tasked with reviewing the management of public funds and monitoring actions to address any weaknesses highlighted in state agency audits. Representative Amy Elik, along with 11 other legislators appointed by the General Assembly leadership, serves on the commission.
In related news, the Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors program (HBIS) announced a temporary pause for new enrollees effective November 6, 2023. However, current enrollees who remain eligible for coverage will continue to be covered, and no one will be removed from the program.
