Illinois State Representative Amy Elik (R-Alton) has expressed her strong disappointment and sadness following the announcement by U.S. Steel that up to 1,000 employees may be laid off at their Granite City steel mill. In a statement, Rep. Elik conveyed her concerns and offered assistance to those affected by the potential job losses.
"I am disgusted and saddened to hear U.S. Steel’s plans to potentially lay off up to 1,000 employees in Madison County," said Rep. Elik. "Granite City employees and their families have provided loyal, skilled labor to the steel industry for decades, and U.S. Steel is pulling the rug out from under them. U.S. Steel should be doing everything it can to keep the Granite City steel mill operating at capacity, and I don’t see the company making that effort."
Rep. Elik expressed her willingness to collaborate with anyone who could help in preserving the jobs in Granite City. She emphasized her empathy for the workers and their families, particularly during the holiday season. Rep. Elik stated, "My heart goes out to all the workers and families impacted, especially during the Holiday season. I join in the sadness and anger of the city of Granite City and the employees who have dedicated their livelihoods to the steel industry."
Recognizing the challenges the affected employees may face, Rep. Elik encouraged them to seek support and resources. She urged them to contact the Southwestern Illinois workNET Center in Wood River at 618-296-4301 for job search assistance and potential training opportunities. Additionally, Rep. Elik assured those impacted that her district office in Alton is available to provide any necessary assistance. They can be reached at 618-433-8046.
The potential layoffs at the Granite City steel mill have caused significant concern and distress in the community. Rep. Elik's statement reflects the shared sentiments of many who believe that U.S. Steel should be taking more proactive measures to maintain the operation of the mill and preserve the livelihoods of its dedicated workforce.
The future of the Granite City steel mill remains uncertain, but with the support and determination of leaders like Rep. Elik, there is hope for finding solutions that can prevent further job losses and secure a stable future for the employees and their families.
